Paris and Normandy: My First River Cruise
Paris is always a memorable experience, and this trip was no different. On this visit, I was excited to sail on my first river cruise aboard Amawaterways’ AmaLyra exploring Paris and Normandy. We arrived in Paris shortly after the 2024 Olympics ended and just before the Paralympics began.
Arrival at Charles De Gaulle
After clearing customs and picking up our luggage at baggage claim, my travel buddy and I headed to find our reserved Uber. Trying to the pickup point at Charles De Gaulle was somewhat challenging. All the signs for the Ride Share area led us in the wrong direction. Eventually we found our Uber driver. Thankfully he waited for us patiently—though it came with a surcharge.
Hotel Esteem Tour Eiffel
We arrived at Hotel Esteem Tour Eiffel bright and early at 7:00 AM. To our delight, the staff welcomed us warmly and allowed us to check in immediately. Our room was cozy but well-appointed, with a spacious bathroom and a delightful Nespresso machine for morning espresso.
This boutique hotel, nestled in the Beaugrenelle district, offers just 29 guest rooms. Its charm lies in its proximity to the Eiffel Tower, only a 15-minute walk away, and its quaint neighborhood filled with corner cafés. The hotel offers a delicious breakfast for a small fee and complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day. Perfect for couples, families, or small groups, this 4-star hotel is worth every Euro.
Exploring Paris
We spent two full days sightseeing, riding the metro, and savoring local cuisine. If you visit Paris, don’t miss La Crème de Paris—both the sweet and savory crepes are divine! For a unique way to see the city, we boarded the Batobus, a hop-on-hop-off riverboat that stops at major landmarks like Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower.
Amawaterways‘ AmaLyra – Luxury River Cruising
Three days after our arrival, it was time to board the AmaLyra for my first luxury river cruise. River cruising is vastly different from ocean cruising. The check-in process was refreshingly simple—just a podium, a small tent, and minimal lines. Within minutes, we were relaxing in the lounge, enjoying snacks and drinks after boarding.
Our stateroom on the upper deck featured a French balcony, elegant decor, and thoughtful amenities like luxury bath products, bottled water, and plush robes. The cruise itinerary included stops at Les Andelys, Le Havre, Caudebec-en-Caux, Rouen, Vernon, and Paris. Each port offered a choice of three included excursions, rich in history and culture. If you get a chance, I highly recommend Amawaterway’s Paris and Normandy Itinerary.
Normandy – A Humbling Experience
The highlight of the trip was visiting the Normandy US Landing Beaches. As a retired military service member, walking these historic grounds was deeply moving. At Omaha Beach, we explored the visitor center, memorial wall, and the meticulously maintained American Cemetery.
The most emotional moment was visiting the grave of a distant relative who died during the D-Day invasion. With the help of the cemetery staff, I located his resting place. Using sand from Omaha Beach, I highlighted his name on the marble cross. It was a solemn and unforgettable experience.
Rouen, Vernon, and Giverny
In Rouen, we visited the site where Joan of Arc was martyred and marveled at the city’s historic charm. From Vernon, I opted for a bike tour to Giverny, where we explored Monet’s home and gardens and paid our respects at his family gravesite.
This 7-day river cruise was a perfect blend of history, culture, and serene beauty. It was an unforgettable journey that I highly recommend to anyone seeking a unique travel experience.
Why Ocean Cruisers Should Try River Cruising
If you’re an avid ocean cruiser, you already know the joy of exploring multiple destinations while enjoying the luxury of your floating hotel. But have you ever considered river cruising? It’s a completely different experience that brings a unique charm and intimacy to your travels.
A More Intimate Way to Cruise
Unlike the grandeur of ocean liners, river cruise ships are designed for smaller groups. Imagine sailing along Europe’s historic rivers or the Mekong Delta with just 100-200 fellow travelers. With fewer passengers, you’ll enjoy a more personalized experience, shorter lines, and the chance to truly connect with your surroundings.
Get Closer to Iconic Destinations
On a river cruise, you dock in the heart of cities and towns, often steps away from top attractions. Forget long bus rides from the port—your journey starts as soon as you disembark. Whether it’s the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the medieval streets of Rouen, everything is within reach.
Inclusive and Stress-Free Travel
River cruising offers exceptional value. Your fare typically includes excursions, gourmet dining, wine and beer with meals, and even bicycles for exploring onshore. AmaWaterways, for example, offers expertly guided tours in every port, from vineyard tastings to historical landmarks, so you can experience more without worrying about added costs.
A Different Pace of Life
If you love the excitement of ocean cruising but want a change of pace, river cruising is a refreshing alternative. The slower journeys allow you to immerse yourself in each destination, while the calm waters of the river make for a smoother ride.
